Improvement of Engine Head Cleaning Process in Remanufacturing

Pre-washing and degreasing of an aluminum cylinder head before sandblasting

Cleaning of a Cylinder Head in Remanufacturing Applications

An automotive company requested our expertise to perform intermediate cleaning of an aluminum steering rack housing after machining.

Interior/Exterior cleaning requirements:

  • 1 mg per part (gravimetry)
  • 0 particles > 600 µm (particle size)
  • Perfect drying

Part dimensions:

  • Diameter: 240 mm (9 ⁷/₁₆”)
  • Height: 546 mm (21 ¹/₂”)

Type of contamination: cutting oil and chips

Unit flow: housing cleaning in 42 seconds

Space restriction: maximum allowed width: 700 mm (27 ⁹/₁₆”)

Result

Cycle time reduced by 6 times
Load handling reduced by 4 times
Number of machines required reduced by 6 times

An optimization campaign of the washing process allowed us to identify the right parameters.

The use of high pressures and temperatures, along with a specialized detergent, enables us to significantly reduce the costs of washing operations.

Reduction of Consumption

The machine includes several options for saving water, electricity, and detergent:

  • Sludge separation dredge
  • High-capacity oil separator
  • Thermal insulation
  • Vapor condenser
